Sweet couple Rebecca and Oran chose the Glengariff Historic Estate winery and vineyards west of Brisbane for the sweeping views that only added to the romance of their wedding day. They have lots of great budget-friendly and handmade tips to share.
Couple: Rebecca and Oran
Date: 6th June, 2009
Location: Glengariff Historic Estate, Dayboro, QLD
Photography: Mark at Xpose’, Arana Hills, QLD
Gown: Off the rack, ex-display gown from Brides by the Bay, Capalaba, QLD.
Shoes: Scooter from Myer.
Suit: Tony Barlow Menswear, Brisbane.
Wedding Party: One groomsman – same as grooms suit. One bridesmaid – gown from Sugar and Spice factory outlet, Strathpine, QLD.
Accessories: Fresh roses in Brides hair (leftover from table arrangements); Bride’s necklace from Equip; brooch in Bridesmaids hair from Diva; Bridesmaid earrings from Equip; Groom and Groomsman ties from Tie Rack.
Hair: Donna Sullivan, Gold Coast, QLD. Hair for Brides, Mother of Bride and Bridesmaid
Makeup: Donna Sullivan, Gold Coast, QLD. Makeup for Brides, Mother of Bride and Bridesmaid (and touch up to stressed out, overtired grooms blue circles under the eyes!)
Flowers: Roses, berries and maroon orchid bouquet for Bride and smaller bouquet for the Bridesmaid, plus buttonholes for Groom and Groomsman from One Stop Wedding Shop, Strathpine, QLD.
Ceremony: Wedding Lawn at the Glengariff Historic Estate, Dayboro, QLD. The venue is a historic winery that is over 100 years old, so it had a lovely old world charm to it. The ceremony garden won my husband over completely, with its spectacular views out over the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Reception: Daytime reception upstairs at the Glengariff Historic Estate, Dayboro, QLD. The upstairs reception venue was truly unique as there was a vast array of antiques and old family photos. Choosing a day reception also helped us keep our costs to a minimum. Canapes for 1.5 hours (lots!), main meal of fillet mignon or chicken (alternate drops) – 11am-2.30pm. EVERYONE commented on how spectacular the food was (and how MUCH there was, no one left hungry). We also provided a lolly bar for a post cake treat! The venue set it up beautifully! We decorated with various vases, some provided by venue. We provided lolly bar with lollies from Tom’s Confectionary Warehouse, Hendra, QLD. We also bought wooden letters from Spotlight which were painted and assembled by my lovely husband.
Music: Mixed CD played on audio system. There were hidden speakers in the hedging surrounding the wedding lawn, so this was ideal.
Celebrant: Andrew Sinclair
Decoration: Fifteen metre table runner from eBay. Candle holders supplied by the venue. Ten flower arrangements – we bought flowers wholesale and mum arranged them. Vases from Brisbane Chinatown. Flowers from Northside Flower Market, Stafford, QLD. Fifteen bags of dried flower petals from eBay.
Stationery: Handmade with supplies from Bochel in sydney (bought online) and Truly Madly Deeply (online).
Cake: Cake That!, Alderley, QLD.
Transport: For guests we hired a bus from Thompsons, Strathpine, QLD and had pick-up locations in the CBD and at the nearest train station. We actually didn’t tell the guests where we were getting married, so they were all very excited to jump on a bus to the ‘mystery location’. This also helped with ensuring all guests arrived on time and that people couple opt to take public transport to the CBD or train station and not worry about driving home. We hired a Chrysler 300 for the bridal car from M2000 car rental which the father of the groom chauffeured.
Budget Tip: We kept costs down by shopping around to ensure we got the best price (ie. flowers we bought for $300 cheaper than other quotes, dress off the rack – perfect fit, no alterations required etc). Also, let yourself be open to different things – a wedding doesn’t have to be a cookie cutter type event, by doing things a little differently to the norm you can save a lot. We delivered the cake to venue ourselves to save a $150 delivery fee.
Eco-friendly Tip: Hiring a bus to transport guests (saved dozens of cars driving).
Handmade Tip: Handmade invites/placecards etc. Mum arranged the flowers. I handmade bomboniere of a glass jar with a candle in it, surrounded by a ribbon and diamante buckle. Handmade wooden “Sweet Love” sign for lolly bar. Handmade fridge magnets for the Save The Date notification.
I wish: … I had more time off work to organise the wedding so I could have been less stressed! (I only got the Friday before the wedding off!). I also wish that we had more time to rehearse our wedding dance … I have two left feet! I also wish, I could have had a practice run down the aisle – I was no nervous I was going to fall over!!!
Something Special: Writing our vows and the wording for the ceremony. Everyone commented on how beautiful they were, and we felt that it really reflected us as a couple. We didn’t show them to anyone and made a special dedication to my Grandmother who passed away, which certainly bought on a few tears.
